Charter School or Homeschool . . . ?

So now I have a new question to ponder!  We just found a "charter" school here and it looks amazing so now I am debating homeschool or this new charter school.  The class sizes are super, super small and the kinders meet with the first graders so if your child is doing well they will move them to a higher level of material.  I DON'T KNOW!!??  Thoughts anyone?  I have never doubted my decision to homeschool for a moment, but this looks so good and not to mention one of her good friends is in it also. Hmmm... I don't know if I am really looking for an answer, maybe just some thoughts and a chance to vent!  Thanks for the venting session!

aunt anna here ( i'm going thru becca's blog through mark's site!). i would choose the charter school. i think kids need time away from the family to develop confidence in themselves. i also think they are exposed to a lot of scholastic ideas that there just isn't enough time for at home. what about a "joy" school? i don't know much about them, but again it gives them some independence. (i love to keep up with you by reading your blog and i loved the pillow case dresses. that is so something i would have done with my girls.

Wow. I totally disagree with your aunt on her reasoning, you can offer your kid all of that 100% better than any school setting, but a charter school is a really nice compromise, as it does address some of the main public school issues, like huge class size and such. Does it cost money? I'm assuming it does not. I'd be in a torn state too, if I were you! Let me know what you decide.

Hey doll-

Ok, so having done the public school thing and the home school thing, I would say that your best answer is to pray about it. Either way your best choice is to invest time in your kids- whether that is in a charter school or homeschool. Both have a number of advantages and disadvantages. I do appreciate your anxiety with this matter as I just went through these same feelings last December, for me the choice was easy, the public school wasn't teaching them anything. For you it doesn't seem quite as simple, again, pray about it and you will get the comfort and confirmation that you need to make the right decision. Oh, and I do agree with Anna, keep up the blog- WE LOVE TO SEE everything that you're up to...

Well I am currently reading a book about homeschooling and it's advantages. I have wanted to home school for a while and totally support anyone who wants to do that. I agree with rebecca that you can give them everything they need at home. And I also agree with the last person that it is something to pray about. Both sound nice and no matter what you decide you can also switch later on. I have decided to home school Heidi and am just now figuring out how to get started. However, our kindergarten out here is full day and I just don't think that my five year old needs to be in school from 9-3 everyday. Maybe the time in school is something to consider. Good luck. I will keep checking to see what you decide and I will probably copy some of your home schooling ideas!!

wow..that is a hard decision! I have never been one to homeschool my kids..I have nothing against it, I just don't feel like I am at that stage in my life. I do know of SEVERAL families that DO homeschool and they are doing a great job of it, but on the other hand what is is going to hurt if you give her the opportunity to go to the charter school? You can always pull her out if you feel that it isn't the right thing for her.
Good luck and tell us how it goes!!

okay so I am totally going out on a limb and speaking my mind. I've done the home school thing and the school thing. Both have their advantages and when they are younger I think both are great. But after being the primary pres of 120 kids where about 30 were home schooled and the rest were not I have a different opinion. Going to a school away from home isn't just about book learning. Its street smarts and a big one I never noticed until now is-kids need to learn to work with other adults besides their parents. The home school kids struggle so much on Sunday because it's not their mom teaching. I feel bad for many of them. As they get older they need social interaction with kids and adult leaders. I tried Joy school too. There are a lot of little co-op preschool programs like that. Everyone I know that's done charter has loved it.
Good Luck and Definately pray!
